brady cash: character interview

Time for the next character interview in the A Stranger Thing interview series! So far we’ve heard from Lorylyn, Kylar, and Zibby, and if you missed those, you can read them by clicking the character’s name! Today’s featured character is Brady, who is Lorylyn’s ex-boyfriend and has a long, drawn-out, troubled history with her over the past 12 years. Most recently, they are slowly rebuilding their friendship after a huge fight and 7 months of silence. Within the last year, Brady also had a five-year relationship with his most recent ex…and fiancée…Holly, end in disaster. You’ll hear a little more about that if you read the book! 🙂

-What’s your name?

~Brady Cash

-How old are you?

~27

-Where do you live?

~I live in Denver; I’m a shortstop for the Colorado Rockies.

-If you were an alcoholic beverage, which one would you be and why?

~I would be a Shiner Bock. I came to love that beer while living in Texas during college and the first few years after. I feel like by looking at the bottle, you don’t know what it’s going to taste like, and sometimes I don’t know if I really even know myself or what I’m ever going to do or why I do it.

-What’s your biggest secret?

~Well, it’s actually one that was kept from me for several years, which I find out about in A Stranger Thing. Okay, well that’s not fair…somebody tried to tell me about it a long time ago. But I didn’t believe it then, and now…well, even after I know, it’s still pretty much a secret, because only a couple other people know about it.

-What’s the biggest surprise we’ll see from you in A Stranger Thing (without giving too much away, of course)?

~Maybe the effect that finding out that secret has on me and on a couple relationships in my life. That has probably been the biggest surprise to me.

-What’s one thing that happens in A Stranger Thing that you would change, if you could (again, without giving too much away)?

~I would go back and tell myself to stop making excuses and face things head-on. There’s a lot of missed time I’ll never get back, and although I don’t think the outcome of things would’ve been different, I wish I had handled it differently.

Ok, thanks, Brady! These guys are doing a good job not giving too much away, but hopefully they’re making you curious! 😉 Tomorrow you’ll hear from Xavier, one of the guys Kylar talked about in her interview…and who’s also the focus of some of her songs. 🙂

Happy wondering. 🙂

zibby ainsley: character interview

Today’s interview features Zibby, another main character in my upcoming novel, A Stranger Thing! If you missed the first two interviews in the series, you can find them here: Lorylyn’s interview and Kylar’s interview. Zibby is normally pretty low-key, but those who’ve read past books about Zibby are in for something new this time around, because I would say her storyline in A Stranger Thing is the most unexpected of any character’s. 😉

-What’s your name?

~Zibby Ainsley is how my friends know me. Professionally I use Isabella Barrini. Isabella’s my real first name, and Barrini is my maiden name.

-How old are you?

~26

-Where do you live?

~Headed to Denver w/ my husband DJ, who just got a job there! My friend Lorylyn is moving out there too, and we’re going to open a counseling practice together. For the last 8 years I lived in Irvine, Indiana and went to college at Irelan University.

-If you were an alcoholic beverage, which one would you be and why?

~I’d be a vodka Sprite, because I’m pretty laid-back and not much dramatic stuff happens in my life, but just when you think you can predict my story, a little splash of zest and flavor will get thrown in the mix.

-What’s your biggest secret?

~My parents think DJ and I got married when we were 22 and had just finished undergrad. We really got married in Amsterdam when I was 20 and he was 21.

-What’s the biggest surprise we’ll see from you in A Stranger Thing (without giving too much away, of course)?

~What happens when DJ and I are looking for houses in Denver.

-What’s one thing that happens in A Stranger Thing that you would change, if you could (again, without giving too much away)?

~There’s one really big thing I could say I’d change…but it would mean changing who I am, or who someone else is. And I really believe in being who you are and following your dreams/desires, and doing what’s right for your life. So…I wouldn’t change anything.

-Thanks, Zibby! If you want to know more, read about Zibby during her 8 years of college in All That Sparkles Isn’t Real Sapphire and I Don’t Want the Rest of Your Life.

Tomorrow, I’ll be switching over to the first of the major male characters in the novel…you’ll be hearing from Brady Cash, Lorylyn’s ex-boyfriend and a shortstop for the Colorado Rockies! See you then. 🙂

kylar landell: character interview

Time for the second character interview for my upcoming novel, A Stranger Thing! If you missed the first one yesterday, featuring Lorylyn Porter, check it out here: Lorylyn’s interview. Today’s character is Kylar Landell, who attended Irelan University in Irvine, Indiana with Lorylyn, and has been working at a bank in Irvine since graduating 3 years ago. But her real interests are music…and boys. And she just might have the craziest love life of all the characters. 😉

-What’s your name?

~Kylar Landell

-How old are you?

~25

-Where do you live?

~I’m moving from Irvine to Chicago. I’ll be living w/ some of my Irelan roommates, Jansen, Thaler, and Xav.

-If you were an alcoholic beverage, which one would you be and why?

~I’d be a Naked Surfer, the drink my friends and I made up in college. It’s rum, beer, and Hawaiian Punch. I’d be that ‘cause I’m a little bit of a lot of different things. I was a business major, but my real passion is writing songs. My friend Xav thinks I’m a player and hook up w/ all these guys, but I’ve really only ever slept w/ 3 guys, and I loved them all. So I’m kinda innocent, but I’m also not a pushover. My songs are definitely not happy love songs… 🙂 I’m kinda low-maintenance like beer, but w/ a hard edge like rum, and a splash of color, like Hawaiian punch. Fitting that it’s red…it probably represents my bleeding heart from all the guys who’ve broken it. :p

-What’s your biggest secret?

~I’ve been in love w/ my roommate Xav for the entire 8 years I’ve known him. We hook up, but he has no idea I have real feelings for him. It’s why I let him think I’m just like him…a player. I guess another part of that secret is I also think he might be in love w/ me and not even know it or be willing to admit it to himself.

-What’s the biggest surprise we’ll see from you in A Stranger Thing (without giving too much away, of course)?

~I’ve had 3 guys in my life over the last few years. At the beginning of A Stranger Thing, I write a song called “1 Down” about one of them, Hersh, getting married. At the end of the book, I write a song called “2 Down.” I think the biggest surprise is who that one’s about and how it ends.

-What’s one thing that happens in A Stranger Thing that you would change, if you could (again, without giving too much away)?

~Um. I mean, the whole way the relationship in the question above ends. I’m not saying I want that relationship back, and maybe if it hadn’t ended in such a shitty way, I wouldn’t have felt any closure over it. But still, it was awful, and who wants that?

-Thanks, Kylar! Kylar is also a main character in All That Sparkles Isn’t Real Sapphire and I Don’t Want the Rest of Your Life. And you can read some of the songs she wrote prior to A Stranger Thing here: Kylar’s songs! Teaser…one of the songs will reappear in A Stranger Thing…in a pretty dramatic way. 😉 Tomorrow, look for the next interview in the series, with Lorylyn and Kylar’s college friend and Lorylyn’s future business partner Zibby!

lorylyn porter: character interview

Today is the first character interview for my upcoming novel A Stranger Thing! Read about the plot of the book here: A Stranger Thing. Today’s featured character, Lorylyn Porter, has been around since the Spin the Bottle days, and now she’s just gotten her PhD and is off on a new adventure!

-What’s your name?

~Lorylyn Porter

-How old are you?

~25

-Where do you live?

~I’m getting ready to move from Indiana, where I grew up and went to college, to Denver to open a counseling practice with my friend Zibby.

-If you were an alcoholic beverage, which one would you be and why?

~I think I would be a shot of pineapple upside down cake, because I’m little, and I’m usually bright and cheery like the colors of the shot. It’s pink and yellow, and I also think the line between them represents the two sides of me: my professional side, Dr. Porter, where I’m able to feel totally confident counseling others, and my personal side, where I still have no idea which guy I want to be with. 🙂

-What’s your biggest secret?

~That I’m in love with my friend Jansen’s best friend, Jason. Not a fantasy crush love, like it was when it started, but real love. A few of my friends know, including Jansen, but I would die if Jason found out.

-What’s the biggest surprise we’ll see from you in A Stranger Thing (without giving too much away, of course)?

~Well, I think it’s who’s waiting for me at the airport in New York. In case you didn’t read the last book about me, I Don’t Want the Rest of Your Life, it ended with me getting a plane ticket to NYC in the mail with an anonymous note saying, “Please come. I need to talk to you and I have a surprise for you.” And don’t think you’re gonna find out on page one. 😉

-What’s one thing that happens in A Stranger Thing that you would change, if you could (again, without giving too much away)?

~I would change what happens with Brady’s grandma, because even though I think things ended up how they should’ve, I would’ve liked it to get to the same point, but…differently. I guess that’s all I can say for now.

-Thanks, Lorylyn! Tomorrow, look for the next interview in the series, this time with Lorylyn’s college roommate and good friend Kylar! Kylar will answer the same questions Lorylyn did today. 🙂

a stranger thing

My newest book, A Stranger Thing, will be out in a few weeks! In the next several days, I will be publishing fun interviews with the major characters. 🙂 To give you a little idea what the book’s about, here’s the back cover description:

A plane ticket to New York with an anonymous note: “Please come. I need to talk to you and I have a surprise for you.” A scandalous engagement. A long-sought-after answer that was once of ultimate importance but will now have unforeseen consequences. Two nearly decade-long relationships dissolving in hours. Sightings of a little girl who may or may not exist. A photograph titled From Budapest With Love. An international murder with ties surprisingly close to home.

It’s not exactly what Lorylyn Porter, Kylar Landell, Jansen Montgomery, and Zibby Ainsley had in mind when they came up with the motto “new year, new lives, new guys.” But as Lorylyn, Zibby, and Zibby’s husband DJ move to Denver and Kylar and Jansen settle in Chicago, they will all encounter the unexpected. From a family emergency to the fallout of an emergency room disaster, from a letter with a shocking return address to a troubling analysis of a psychological test, each girl’s life will irreversibly change in a matter of days.

And while “new guys” isn’t so accurate, except maybe for Lorylyn’s roommate Taylor, who consistently dates two or three guys at once, it is definitely a new year and a new life for each of the girls…a year in which strangers will become fast friends, and the oldest of friends will suddenly find themselves little more than strangers.

Look for Lorylyn’s interview first, coming tomorrow!! 🙂
