how I still watch Nashville

Like many Nashies, aka diehard fans of the show Nashville, I am still struggling with Rayna’s death. To witness a Nashville world where Rayna and Deacon can no longer be together, and without Rayna’s music, is devastating every single week. I couldn’t sleep the night she died, and 2 minutes into the funeral episode I was crying hysterically. I have never cared so much about a fictional character or a fictional relationship until Rayna and Deacon.

Rayna and Deacon.

The most epic love story I have ever read, watched, heard of, anything. I am a writer, and I think I have written a couple pretty incredible love stories, with a depth and bond unlike the boring cliches often found in books, TV shows, and movies. But when I watch Rayna and Deacon, I am inspired to to go even deeper, write something more intense.

And while this post-Rayna-and-Deacon world is still unfathomable, I am still a Nashie. I do love the other characters, and I want to be able to keep watching the show. I know I will keep watching. So in order to make myself okay with the gut-wrenching absence of Rayna, and Rayna and Deacon, I’ve had to invent my own reality…an alternate ending of sorts.

I read the interviews with the showrunners about how closely they worked with Connie Britton to make Rayna’s death meaningful and fitting to her character. The problem is, I completely disagree with the decision they made. I hate the way she died, and I don’t think it fit her character at all.

The thing I hate most about how Rayna died is it seemed to me there was an element of choice, or maybe acceptance. It was like there was a moment she knew she was going to die, and instead of fighting like hell, like she demanded of Deacon when he had cancer and surgery, she just let go. That was not Rayna. Rayna was fierce and feisty and loved Maddie and Daphne and Deacon way too much to just close her eyes and give up.

I also absolutely can’t stand that she spent her last episode in a hospital bed. Sure, the conversations she had with various characters that day were impactful. But those could have easily been spread across everyday-life scenes in a normal episode, so that those characters still got to have those significant last moments with her, and her death could have happened differently.

So when it happened, I kept asking myself, if she had to die, how would I have done it, if it were up to me? And the answer came to me pretty easily. I would’ve had Rayna die in a plane crash.

A plane crash obviously takes away the element of choice or acceptance, and she could have spent her last day with Deacon and her family before going to the airport to fly wherever.

And…a plane-crash death for Rayna was almost even foreshadowed back in January, especially for those of us who had heard she would not survive the season.

Juliette had just survived a plane crash, and Rayna was so scared to get on a plane she had a panic attack when she flew to California, then she ended up renting a car to drive back across the country. It would’ve been ironic and tragic had she ended up dying the next time she decided to fly…but I would have been able to live with it.

So, every week when it’s time for Nashville, that is the alternate ending I pretend is real, so I can keep watching.

But in my heart, it will always be Rayna and Deacon, and I’ll always love seasons 1 – 5 x 07 the most. ❤ ❤ ❤

kylar landell: character interview

Time for the second character interview for my upcoming novel, A Stranger Thing! If you missed the first one yesterday, featuring Lorylyn Porter, check it out here: Lorylyn’s interview. Today’s character is Kylar Landell, who attended Irelan University in Irvine, Indiana with Lorylyn, and has been working at a bank in Irvine since graduating 3 years ago. But her real interests are music…and boys. And she just might have the craziest love life of all the characters. 😉

-What’s your name?

~Kylar Landell

-How old are you?

~25

-Where do you live?

~I’m moving from Irvine to Chicago. I’ll be living w/ some of my Irelan roommates, Jansen, Thaler, and Xav.

-If you were an alcoholic beverage, which one would you be and why?

~I’d be a Naked Surfer, the drink my friends and I made up in college. It’s rum, beer, and Hawaiian Punch. I’d be that ‘cause I’m a little bit of a lot of different things. I was a business major, but my real passion is writing songs. My friend Xav thinks I’m a player and hook up w/ all these guys, but I’ve really only ever slept w/ 3 guys, and I loved them all. So I’m kinda innocent, but I’m also not a pushover. My songs are definitely not happy love songs… 🙂 I’m kinda low-maintenance like beer, but w/ a hard edge like rum, and a splash of color, like Hawaiian punch. Fitting that it’s red…it probably represents my bleeding heart from all the guys who’ve broken it. :p

-What’s your biggest secret?

~I’ve been in love w/ my roommate Xav for the entire 8 years I’ve known him. We hook up, but he has no idea I have real feelings for him. It’s why I let him think I’m just like him…a player. I guess another part of that secret is I also think he might be in love w/ me and not even know it or be willing to admit it to himself.

-What’s the biggest surprise we’ll see from you in A Stranger Thing (without giving too much away, of course)?

~I’ve had 3 guys in my life over the last few years. At the beginning of A Stranger Thing, I write a song called “1 Down” about one of them, Hersh, getting married. At the end of the book, I write a song called “2 Down.” I think the biggest surprise is who that one’s about and how it ends.

-What’s one thing that happens in A Stranger Thing that you would change, if you could (again, without giving too much away)?

~Um. I mean, the whole way the relationship in the question above ends. I’m not saying I want that relationship back, and maybe if it hadn’t ended in such a shitty way, I wouldn’t have felt any closure over it. But still, it was awful, and who wants that?

-Thanks, Kylar! Kylar is also a main character in All That Sparkles Isn’t Real Sapphire and I Don’t Want the Rest of Your Life. And you can read some of the songs she wrote prior to A Stranger Thing here: Kylar’s songs! Teaser…one of the songs will reappear in A Stranger Thing…in a pretty dramatic way. 😉 Tomorrow, look for the next interview in the series, with Lorylyn and Kylar’s college friend and Lorylyn’s future business partner Zibby!

lorylyn porter: character interview

Today is the first character interview for my upcoming novel A Stranger Thing! Read about the plot of the book here: A Stranger Thing. Today’s featured character, Lorylyn Porter, has been around since the Spin the Bottle days, and now she’s just gotten her PhD and is off on a new adventure!

-What’s your name?

~Lorylyn Porter

-How old are you?

~25

-Where do you live?

~I’m getting ready to move from Indiana, where I grew up and went to college, to Denver to open a counseling practice with my friend Zibby.

-If you were an alcoholic beverage, which one would you be and why?

~I think I would be a shot of pineapple upside down cake, because I’m little, and I’m usually bright and cheery like the colors of the shot. It’s pink and yellow, and I also think the line between them represents the two sides of me: my professional side, Dr. Porter, where I’m able to feel totally confident counseling others, and my personal side, where I still have no idea which guy I want to be with. 🙂

-What’s your biggest secret?

~That I’m in love with my friend Jansen’s best friend, Jason. Not a fantasy crush love, like it was when it started, but real love. A few of my friends know, including Jansen, but I would die if Jason found out.

-What’s the biggest surprise we’ll see from you in A Stranger Thing (without giving too much away, of course)?

~Well, I think it’s who’s waiting for me at the airport in New York. In case you didn’t read the last book about me, I Don’t Want the Rest of Your Life, it ended with me getting a plane ticket to NYC in the mail with an anonymous note saying, “Please come. I need to talk to you and I have a surprise for you.” And don’t think you’re gonna find out on page one. 😉

-What’s one thing that happens in A Stranger Thing that you would change, if you could (again, without giving too much away)?

~I would change what happens with Brady’s grandma, because even though I think things ended up how they should’ve, I would’ve liked it to get to the same point, but…differently. I guess that’s all I can say for now.

-Thanks, Lorylyn! Tomorrow, look for the next interview in the series, this time with Lorylyn’s college roommate and good friend Kylar! Kylar will answer the same questions Lorylyn did today. 🙂
